Advertising

One great way to reduce the cost of the books to the students is to sell advertising space.  Try to target companies that are either associated with school or that sell to the students or their parents, for example: driving schools, local restaurants, clothes shops, hair & beauty salons,  the school’s bank, uniform suppliers, stationers, local newsagents, local higher or further education colleges and universities, careers services, armed forces recruitment centres and recruitment agencies are just a few suggestions. For more information, advice and letter templates, contact your advisor.

For the best impact, we suggest that you maintain a structured system, this may vary depending on the size of the organisation but the following is a tried and tested system.

  1. Call the organisation and try to establish who the best person to speak to is.
  2. Write to the person using official school headed paper (ask your advisor for a template letter).
  3. Make a follow up call a few days after sending the letter to try to confirm their sponsorship or advertising.

Remember to keep a detailed record of who you have spoken to, when you spoke to them and the outcomes of the communications.  One final piece of advice that may sound obvious but does get forgotten is once advertising has been agreed, do remember to collect the money!

Fundraising

Another way to reduce the cost of the book is to hold fundraising events within school.  Some popular events are:

Cake / card sales

Non-uniform days

Sponsored events e.g. silence, walk, fast, swim, waxing legs!

Gunging & sponging of school ‘personalities’

Providing services e.g. car wash, dog walking
